H. L. Bryant, 79, a longtime resident of Otero County, died Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2006, in Alamogordo.

Mr. Bryant was born Oct. 4, 1926 in Bledsoe, Texas, to Herbert Lee and Helen (Copeland) Bryant. He spent his early years during the Depression on a farm near Lingo, in Roosevelt County, where he learned to work hard. He graduated from Rogers High School in Rogers, and attended Eastern New Mexico University. He later received his degree in 1954 from West Texas State University in Canyon, Texas, where he was the trainer-manager of the basketball and football teams. After graduation, he lived and taught at Boys Ranch near Amarillo, Texas, for 18 months. He moved to Aztec in 1957 where he taught school for 2 1/2 years. In 1960 he came to Alamogordo, where he taught at North Elementary School for 26 years, retiring in 1986.

In 1962 he was ordained as a deacon at First Baptist Church and began teaching a Sunday school class of intermediate boys. In 1964 he married Mozelle, and they moved to High Rolls, where they lived until 2002, when they moved to La Luz. He began teaching an adult men's class at church in 1965. After a few years, he served as Sunday school director for one year, after which he was asked to teach a fifth grade class. From that time on, until recently, he taught fifth and sixth grade boys and girls, and also taught Vacation Bible School.

He was active in every area of church work, and served as director of men's work at First Baptist Church for many years. He joined the adult choir in 1964 and was also active in the teenager choir. Active in associational work, he served on the executive board and also as Baptist men's director of Mountain Valley Baptist Association for 30 years. On the state, level he served as vice-president of New Mexico Baptist Men for three years, and then as president the following three years. He helped with construction of the Baptist Camp at Sivell's, as well as the Baptist missions in Timberon and Mescalero. While teaching school, he spent his summers helping with Royal Ambassador camps at Sivell's, Inlow and Hesperus, continuing until the summer of 2000. He was a Gideon for many years, a Master Gardner, managed an apple orchard in High Rolls for many years, was a beekeeper, and a member of the Sounds of Enchantment, the local barbershop singers.

Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Mozelle Bryant, of the family home; a son, H.L. "Chip" Bryant and his wife Julie, of La Luz; two stepdaughters, Michelle Penn, of Lancaster, Calif., and Cheryl Robertson and her husband Tommy, of Boron, Calif.; three granddaughters, Ronda Perkin and her husband David, of Ithaca, Mich., Luanna Robertson, of Boron, Calif., and Miranda Bryant, of La Luz; two grandsons, Joshua and David Bryant, of La Luz; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary Ann Bluhm and her husband Dennis, of Abilene, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Sid and Joe Bryant.

A memorial service will be conducted Thursday, Sept. 29, at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Milford Misener officiating.

Cremation has taken place and inurnment will be in the Causey, New Mexico, Cemetery.

Services are under the direction of Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home.
