In the spring of 1839 Comfort Joy, in company with his son David and his daughter Harriet and her husband, Luther H. Ludlow, left Evans, Erie county, New York, for the state of Michigan, and arrived in Springport township on the 19th of April, that year. The father soon afterward returned to New York for the remainder of the family, with whom he arrived again in Jackson county in June of the same year. He took up a tract of land in section 34, Springport township, and here he resided until 1845, when he removed to Kalamazoo county, where he remained until 1849, when he came again to Jackson county. In 1855 he returned to Kalamazoo county, which thereafter was his place of abode until his death, which occurred on the 9th of August, 1869. His first wife, to whom he was married in Seneca, Ontario county, New York, on the 27th of December, 1810, died on the 28th of March, 1844, and she was the first person to be laid to rest in the cemetery of Springport and Tompkins townships, Jackson county. In 1845 Mr. Joy married Cynthia Thorndike, who long survived him, her death occurring in Galesburg, Kalamazoo county, on the 14th of December, 1894. Comfort Joy was a miller by trade and followed this vocation during his business career in the state of New York, but after coming to Michigan he devoted his attention to agricultural pursuits. He was originally arrayed as a supporter of the Whig party, but identified himself With the Republican party at the time of its formation and thereafter was a stanch advocate of its principles. He was an active and zealous member of the Presbyterian church and exemplified his faith in his daily walk and conversation, being a man of indubitable probity and one who commanded respect on every hand. While a resident of New York he held the office of constable, and in Jackson county he was assessor of his school district during nearly the entire period of his residence here, being succeeded by his son Alonzo, father of the subject, who was in turn succeeded by the subject himself, who has ever since been incumbent of this office.
