After researching US Census records I began to piece together information from 1900-1940 reports. One of my discoveries was that from the end of the Civil War and after the slaves were emancipated and they began to scatter to other states, they would change their names. This made it difficult to trace their lineage, however only the head of the household and his spouse would change their names leaving the children's names unchanged. This was the case of Jarret V. and Jennie Smith, according to the 1900 Census their names was Venable (M,39) and Jane Smith (F,27) and they listed their children's names: Ezzra (M,18); Hester (F,13); Preston (M,10); Cora (F,6); Sarah (F,4) and Henry (M,2). The location of Stokes, Tennessee was in the Civil District 1, Dyer County, just northeast of Memphis. Jarret was born in Tennessee and his father was born in North Carolina and his mother was born in Tennessee. Tennessee was one the original slave states and all the children listed were born in this state.

Sometime after Castoria was born in 1901, this family moved to Oklahoma and in the 1910 Census listed the Smith household members: Jarret V. (M,49); Jennie (F,39); Preston (M,20); Cora (F,16); Sarah (F,14); Henry (M,12); Castoria (F,9) and those born in Oklahoma: Willie V. (M,4); Esther (F,2) and Ethel (F, 2/12). Jennie's mother was also living with them Eliza True (F, 70).
Their home was listed in the township of Dewey; Oklahoma County, Oklahoma this area is located on the eastern side of Jones, Oklahoma.
The actual location of my great grand father's burial location is still unknown.
