Gerhardt C. Niemeier, age 85, of Galva, Iowa died Friday, December 31, 2004 at the Ida Grove Hospital.

Funeral Services will be Tuesday, January 4, 2004 at 10:00 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church in Galva with Reverend Paul Egger officiating. Burial will be in the St. John Lutheran Cemetery in rural Galva. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Visitation will be from 4-8:00 pm at St. John Lutheran Church in Galva, where the family will be present from 6-8:00 pm to greet friends.

Gerhardt (Gay) Carl Niemeier was born September 24, 1919, in rural Ida County to Arnold Sr. and Anna (Rusch) Niemeier. He lived with his family in rural Ida County where he attended school. On October 4, 1919, Gerhardt was baptized in St. John Lutheran Church in Galva and in1933 was confirmed.

On April 28, 1942, Gerhardt entered the United States Air Force. He served during WWII in American Panama, earning the rank of Sergeant. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal before his honorable discharge on October 25, 1945.

After returning home, Gerhardt resumed farming. On February 2, 1947, he was united in marriage to Caroline Johanna Godberson at St. John Lutheran Church in Galva. To this union, three children were born: Kenneth, Katherine and Karen.

Gerhardt remained an active member of St. John Lutheran Church throughout his life. He held the positions of: Elder, Trustee, usher, janitor, Financial Secretary and played in the Dartball League.

The love of family and farming were foremost in his life. He also enjoyed playing cards and always had a smile on his face. He was also a member of the Galva American Legion Unit #454.

Left to cherish Gerhardt's memory are his beloved wife, Caroline; children: Kenneth Lee Niemeier and wife Linda, Katherine Ann Thornton and Karen Jensen and husband Jerry; grandchildren: Gerald and Teresa Brown, Chad and Carol Brown, Gabriel and Mona Brown, Kimberley and Kirk Holst, Scott Niemeier, Kristi and Matt Mentink, Chad and Billi Niemeier, and Heather Jensen; great grandchildren: Troy and Keith Brown, Kristen and Megan Brown, Samantha, Cole and Jessi Brown, Jon and Tyann Epping, Dylan and Emma Holst, Mason and Malachi Mentink; sister, Ruth Boysen and husband Vertis, as well as a host of extended family and friends.

Preceding him in death are his parents, Arnold and Anna Niemeier; brothers, Arnold Niemeier, Jr. and Lester Niemeier, sister, Leona (Niemeier) Matthew and brother, Carl Niemeier; grandson, Kevin Niemeier; and sons-in-law: Don Jeffries and Eldon Thornton.
