Carl Ludwig Max, who resided in Akron township, near Rothsay, died Wednesday, April 5, at 8:30 a. m. following a lingering illness.
He was taken ill December 9, suffering from heart trouble and complications.
Mr. Max was born in West Preussen, Germany, Nov. 24, 1860, and came to America in 1887, taking a homestead in 1889, in Akron township, ten miles southwest of Rothsay, where the family has resided ever since.
He was married to Louise Reiman July 19, 1891. Ten children were born to this union—Ed. Otto. Charles and Clara at home; Emma of Breckenridge; Mrs. Wilfred Barringer (Louise) of Rothsay; Ida of Pittsburgh, Pa.; Mrs. Ralph Bullene (Lena) of Rothsay; Henry of Fergus Falls, and Arne, who died in infancy at the age of seven months.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1:30 from the farm home and at 2:30 from the Burau church, Rev. H. M. Thoresen of Fergus Falls officiating.

Carl L. Max was born in West Preusen, Germany, November 24th, 1860 to Martin and Caroline Max. He attended grade school and worked there until he was a young man. His father died there.
Carl, his mother, 3 brothers and 2 sisters came to America in 1887. He received a passport from his uncle, August Burau, who was living here at Elizabeth, MN. They came by ship. The trip took 3 weeks. They settled on a small farm near Elizabeth, MN. Carl worked on a cattle farm near Barnesville about 2 years. Then he came back and took a homestead in Akron township about 10 miles southwest of Rothsay where he farmed with his mother.
Carl was married to Louise Reimann in 1891 at a Lutheran Church in Elizabeth by Reverend Engles. Louise had come from West Preusen, Germany in 1889 and worked in Minneapolis. MN for 2 years doing housework and sewing. Carl farmed with horses and small machinery. He raised small grains, cattle and other animals. They had a log house and a log barn at first but built a house and barn in later years, also other small buildings. They were happy when the Akron Telephone line came through; but electricity did not come through while Carl was alive. They attended the Burau Church and also St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran, when a minister was available, which was about once a month.
On Sunday, July 20th, 1941 Carl and Louise Max celebrated their 50th Golden Anniversary at their farm home on the front lawn. Over 400 people were present.
Carl L. Max died April 5th, 1944 at the age of 83 years. Mrs. Max died April 10th, 1962. She was 94 years old. Their 10 children were Edward, Charles, Emma, Otto, Louise. Henry, Ida, Clara, Anne and Lena.
Edward W. Max was a painter and carpenter and also had 200 acres of land which he rented out to his nephew. Charles W. Max worked on the farm and later took over the farm when his father died in 1943. Mrs. Max, and sister, Clara, stayed with him. j
Emma C. Max lived in Breckenridge and was employed at Breckenridge Telephone Company for 30 years as an operator. She later worked at Jorgensen Variety Store in Wahpeton, N.D. for 9 years, then retired and now lives in Breckenridge. Otto R. Max bought a farm, 7 miles northwest of Foxhome, MN and farmed until he retired. Louise H. Max marred Wilfred Barringer. They farmed west of Rothsay. They had 2 sons: Kenneth, who died at age 14, and Lyle, married to Margaret Popple. They have five children.
Henry S. Max married Hazel Schumann and they live in Fergus Falls, MN. They sold their grocery store and are retired. Ida O. Max who worked in Pittsburg, PA for several years is retired and lives in Breckenridge with her brother. Clara A. Max is keeping house for her brother who lives in Breckenridge. Anne L. Max died at 7 months.
Lena A. Max married Ralph Bullene. They bought a farm southwest of Rothsay. They have one daughter, Marlene. Lena died August 16th, 1972. Marlene married Lawrence L. Dow who works at Lillegard's, in Wahpeton. N.D. Marlene is Bookkeeper at Speis Super Valu in Breckenridge. They live in Breckenridge and have 2 sons; Lee and Mitchell.
Charlie Max sold his farm (the Max homestead) in 1973 to Dennis Torkelson. Edward and Otto Max sold their land and then the 3 boys bought a house in Breckenridge. June 7th. 1974 and moved to town.
