Born in Durban, Natal Province, South Africa, where her father was District Sales Manager of Caterpillar Tractor Company. Named Mary Margaret Peterson, her family always called her Margaret; so through usage and a dislike of the name Mary-Margaret, her name has legally changed to just Margaret.
The family returned to Nevada in 1939, where Margaret attended school in Minden, Douglas County. Following a year in Peoria, she returned to Nevada for a brief stint a UNR, before entering UC Berkeley. She graduated from the Physical Therapy school at UC San Francisco in 1948. On Jun 26, 1948, she married James Berkeley Robison (1926-1973), son of Eugene Noel Robison and Myrtis Mai Hearne. They had three children, Susan (1949-2012), Jane (1951-), and Douglas (1955-). They divorced in Seattle in 1957.
On August 9, 1958, in Berkeley, she married Alan Bradford MacLane (1925-), son of William Bradford MacLane and Natalie Fitch Allen. They had one daughter, Laura Jean, born in Walnut Creek in 1965. Margaret joined the Unitarian Church in 1960, sang in the choir, worked in the office and supported social functions. In addition to being a loving mother and spouse, she was an excellent photographer and cook. With Alan she traveled to China, New Zealand, Hawaii, Canada and many times to Mexico. After a two year fight with cancer, she died at home with Hospice care on July 2, 2003.
