Ernest Vernon Carpenter, 85, of Fort Worth, a minister, fell asleep in Jesus on Saturday, Nov. 8, 2008, after a brief illness.

The Rev. Ernest Vernon Carpetner was born July 11,1923, in South Lebanon, Maine, to Ernest and Hattie Carpenter. He attended school in East Rochester, N.H., and graduated from Spaulding High School in Rochester in 1942. He then attended the New England School of Theology in Brookline, Mass., graduating in 1946, and was ordained to the Christian ministry at Advent Christian Church in Westbrook, Maine, in 1945 during his first pastorate. He also pastored churches in Nooksack, Wash.; Detroit, Mich.; Minneapolis, Minn.; Chillum, Md.; Wallingford, Conn.; Fort Worth; Tustin, Calif.; and Perrin. He served as the president of the Central Advent Christian Mission Society and also served on the Advent Christian denominational board of directors. He also served as a hospital chaplain in his California pastorate, assigned to cancer patients and their families. He was named "Chaplain of the Year," an honor he treasured.

As a young man, he served as song leader and director of many youth and family camps throughout the United States. He also served as coach to a Little League baseball team, the A.C. Sparkies, in the Washington, D.C., area.

He will be sorely missed by his family, friends and parishioners.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Jane Beverly Carpenter; brothers, Gerald, Roger and Dwight; and sisters, Arlene McRae, Althea Blake, Margaret Johnson and Ruth Frazier.

Survivors: His beloved wife of 64 years, Edna; sons, Dwight and wife, Ann, of North Richland Hills and Brent and wife, Glenda, of Mint Hill, N.C.; grandchildren, Scott and wife, Joy, of Indian Trail, N.C., Chad and wife, Cari, of Concord, N.C., Jason and wife, Tamra, of North Richland Hills, Jill and husband, Chet Hart, of Kalamazoo, Mich., and Brian and wife, Heather, of Midland, N.C.; great-grandchildren, Lauren, Hannah, Ryan and Caleb Carpenter; brother, Robert Carpenter of Rochester, N.H.; and several nieces and nephews.
