James Maxwell was born in Fredonia, Caldwell County Kentucky. He married Melinda Johnson daughter of Samuel Johnson. She was born in Jackson County, Missouri in November 1828, probably one of the first white children born in that section. The couple reared nine children: James, Richard, Samuel, Ellen, Henry C, Jane, Wesley, Logan and Addie. The family was members of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
About 1842 Logan and James Maxwell raised a crop of tobacco, the first ever planted in that section of St. Joseph, Missouri.
