Ida Bookwalter, 98, Rochester, departed this life for eternal rest at 1:40 p.m. Tuesday at Hickory Creek Health Care Center of Rochester.
Ida was born June 2, 1911, in Young America, to Melvin and Estella (Michaels) Snavely. Growing up, young Ida shared her childhood years with five sisters and a brother.
On March 26, 1932, in Kokomo she married Floyd Bookwalter. Their union spanned 65 years and produced two children.
Floyd and Ida moved to Rochester from Merrillville nearly 30 years ago to enjoy their golden years on the shores of Lake Manitou. While living in Merrillville, Ida waited tables at some of the area's finest restaurants. As an entrepreneur, she opened Ida's Dress Shop, also in Merrillville, and later operated a full service beauty salon known as Ida's Shoppe.
During her retirement years Ida greatly enjoyed fishing with her trusty casting rod from her north shore home, landing many blue gill and bass. As a dynamic team, Floyd cleaned the fish and Ida fried them to perfection. The kitchen was second nature for Ida. She was well-known for the delicious homemade pies she created to complement the dessert fare at Gropp's Restaurant. Her pie most requested by Floyd was lemon cream.
Preparation of the feast for family celebrations, especially at the holidays, was Ida's forte. Many memories were made in the kitchen with her grandchildren. Their favorite food was grandma's potato soup. They would help her make the rivulets, then enjoy the tasty hot soup.
It was remembered that she served as den mother to the Cub Scouts for several years. Ida could play the violin with great expertise. As a card player, Ida enjoyed spirited games of euchre.
As an artist, Ida's chosen method of expression was through the medium of oils on canvas. She created many treasures for special friends and heirlooms for family, usually of landscapes or florals.
It's known to a few that Ida was a survivor of breast cancer. She was first stricken at age 26. Ida was honored to be recognized for her spirit and positive attitude as a survivor and was featured on the survivors' calendar on December 2004.
Ida was a devoted member of the First Baptist Church and the Order of Eastern Star.
Her survivors include a daughter, a son, seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and a sister.
She was preceded in death by stepson Errett in 1989, her husband, her parents, four sisters and a brother.
She will be laid to eternal rest next to her beloved husband Floyd at the Bethlehem Cemetery, Twelve Mile.
