Nila Cockrell, 93, died peacefully in Abilene, Texas, on Dec. 4th, 2010. She lived at Wesley Court in Abilene.

She was predeceased by her husband, Alby J. Cockrell; parents, William Tolbert Prickett and Nannie Belle Prickett; sisters, Lucille Cotton and Maurine Bolling; and brother, Paul Prickett.

Born Dec. 16, 1916, in Knox City, Texas, Nila grew up in Westover and graduated from high school in Megargel. She married Alby J. Cockrell July 8, 1935. They lived in the Pumphrey community, where he taught school while they were in undergraduate school at McMurry. In 1942, they began a 37-year ministry in the Northwest Texas Conference of the United Methodist Church, serving in Petrolia, Weinert, Aspermont, O'Donnell, Petersburg, Tulia, Hereford, Littlefield, Lubbock, Brownfield, Levelland and Seymour. She, her husband, and her three daughters all attended McMurry University in different decades, making Abilene their de facto hometown.

Mrs. Cockrell led a life of service to her communities. A lifelong member of the United Methodist Church, she was active in the Women's Society of Christian Service. She held offices in local, district conference and jurisdiction levels. She was also deeply involved in youth work in the church. She held the prestigious title of Grand Matron in Eastern Star. Wishing to continue her service to people after retirement from the ministry, she founded a hospice unit in Seymour, where she and her husband operated an antique shop.

Survivors include her daughters, Marsha Hartos, Nancy Jackson (and husband Eberhard Ramm), and Connie Kaplan (and husband Vic Kaplan); six grandchildren, Jill Jackson (and husband Michael Colbert), Todd Jackson (and wife Stefanianna Moore), Jennifer and Jessica Hartos, and Sara and Ben Kaplan; and three great-grandchildren, Ellen Colbert, and Finola and Dashiell Jackson.
