Karl, or Alec as he was known, was born in Stockholm Sweden. His father was a sailing captain and would be away for 2-5 years at a time. The were fairly affluent and owned a oil burning stove. One morning he and his older brother Obbie watched as their mother lit the stove. It exploded and she was burnt alive before their eyes. He stay with his brother for 2 years and ran away to sea at age 12. By the time his father caught up with him he was an able seaman and his life was sailing commercial clippers. He spoke seven languages and worked as an engineer on the Panama canal until 1911 when he entered the USA through Ellis Island. He was soon shanghaied and sailed to southern Europe before he could catch another ship back to the USA.
His mother's maiden name was Hamerjlyn.
