Donna was born in Minnesota. Donna was raised by her grandparents. They often traveled to Holland when she was young to visit family. She attended the Academy of Our Lady of Good Counsel in Mankato, Minnesota and graduated in 1946. Despite journalism being her favorite at the time, she graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in Veterinary Medicine. She was the eleventh woman to graduate that program and the only woman the year she graduated. Donna often told stories about her days at the University of Minnesota. One of the stories being the male students in her veterinary class made sure received the difficult jobs since she was the only female. After graduating the University of Minnesota, she moved to California. While in California she taught at Pierce College. When she returned to Minnesota, she opened her own Veterinary practice in Minneapolis. She could never turn an animal away. People would leave their unwanted animals on her doorstep. She never married or had children. Her life was devoted to helping animals.
