U.S. Army full-rank general. The last active-duty general officer in the U.S. Army with Vietnam War combat experience. He was the 17th Commanding General, United States Army Forces Command, US FORSCOM. He previously served as FORSCOM’s deputy commanding general and chief of staff and before that served as commanding general of the 7th Infantry Division and the U.S. Eighth Army, South Korea.

He served 40 years, retiring in 2010, and in retirement served as an advisor on Korean and Pacific rim matters. Over the course of his career he influenced a number of general officers who served under him, ranging from Lt. Gen. Russel Honore, the Hurricane Katrina savior of New Orleans, to Gen. Tommy Franks, former commander of US Central Command.
