Dorothy Virginia "Dot" Wachter Ashbaugh, 94, born Feb. 10, 1917 in Martins Ferry, Ohio, died Wednesday, April 27, 2011. She was the second of five children born to Harry and Mamie Thornton Wachter. She grew up in Bridgeport, Ohio, and graduated from Bridgeport High School. In 1939 she married Virgil Earl Ashbaugh and they had one child, a daughter, Judity Ann. Upon moving to Pensacola, Fla., in 1946 they became charter members of the Warrington Methodist Church. Although she had no musical training, she became the first choir director of the newly formed church choir until a trained director was found. She remained a loyal member of the choir for over 28 years. She was a devoted, hard working member of Warrington United Methodist Church, serving in many capacities over the years. She taught children's Sunday School and later taught in the Ladies Bible Class. She was a charter member of the Women's Society and served as president as well as other offices. She also served as a member of the Administrative Council. Sometime during the 1990s, she became the first Church historian of Warrington United Methodist Church. She spent several years organizing and cataloging the large collection of material and photographs depicting the history of the church and continued to maintain that position until giving it up in 2003. For a number of years she delivered the altar flowers to church members in the hospitals, one time getting trapped between floors in the elevator at the old Navy Hospital at Mainside. She always recounted that episode with great humor. She took homemade soup and baked goods to shut-ins and provided transportation to hospitals for church members and neighbors. She was a member of Escambia County Homemakers for a number of years. She enjoyed arts and crafts, took painting lessons, worked in ceramics and spent countless hours on needlework projects. She also enjoyed working in her yard. In December of 2003, she moved to Lillian to live with her daughter and son-in-law. She faithfully continued to attend the Warrington United Methodist Church every Sunday and the monthly Women's Society and Golden Years meetings up until the last few months. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Hazel Marie Wachter and Rachel Wachter Higgins; two brothers, Harvey Wachter and Edward Wachter; and her husband, Virgil Ashbaugh, who died in 1980. Survivors include daughter, Judith (Ralph) Drake of Lillian; and niece, Sandra Davanzo of Pennsylvania. The family would like to thank all the wonderful staff of Covenant Hospice at West Florida Hospital for their loving care. She was truly in the company of angels while here on earth. A private graveside service was held at Bayview Memorial Park. A memorial service was held Monday, May 2 at Warrington United Methodist Church. The family requests memorial donations be made to Warrington United Methodist Church, 301 E. Winthrop Ave., Pensacola, FL 32507. Arrangements were made by Bayview Memorial Park, Pensacola, Fla.
