My great grandma named her first son Darlene because she thought it sounded like he was being called "Darling". I guess it sounded that way in her Arkansas accent.
He was a terrific grandpa. I remembered when I would visit him he would go to the local 7-11 and buy us [me, my aunt and uncle] a Big Gulp and a candy bar. My aunt and uncle are only a few years older than me. He ended up sleeping in the rec room downstairs from my aunts room and I remember at night me and my aunt would stay up giggling and being silly. Well, grandpa would get angry and take the pool cue and hit the ceiling with it to get us to be quiet.... LOL. Poor grandpa had to endure us silly girls.
Grandpa was quite a strapping young man and a hard worker. He was a janitor at the elementery school my mom attended in Buena Park, CA. Him and grandma owned and operated the roller rink, so he worked there at nights. After they sold the business they moved to Yucaipa, CA and grandpa was a rancher and owned orange groves. This is how I remember grandpa. I loved it when he took us up in the air while we were sitting in the bucket of the scoop tractor. (I'm not sure of the actual kind of tractor.....LOL). The only time I have ridden a horse (well a shetland pony to be exact) was at grandpas house. The pony belonged to my aunt and she rode the horse. It was kind of like wild west living to me who grew up near the beach in a larger city. Anyway, grandpa was a real good guy and I love and miss him.
