Onda Lucy was born on Aug. 25, 1914 in Philadelphia, the 6th of seven children -- having four sisters Ornella, Mildred, Frances & Mabel and two brothers - Aligi who died as a baby in Italy and David, known as Ollie. Her parents were Donato and Palmina(nee DiPanfilo) Calandra.
She lived in Philadelphia until she was six when her mother died in Feb. 1920.
At that time, she, Rollie & Frances lived with their Uncle Chet in Altoona, PA until her father married Ermina Dispasquantonia in 1921.
The family moved to Cleveland in 1928 when she was 14 & lived in the Collinwood area which was a large Italian community around 152nd & St. Clair Ave.
Onda graduated from Collinwood HS in June 1931 at 17 & married Roy Iafelice, he was 24, on Dec. 5. 1931.
Onda and Roy raised 4 children and were divorced in 1959.
Onda worked all of her adult life as a factory worker -- first at Cleveland Graphite Bronze and then Kerr-Lakeside where she met Al and retired in 1965.
She lost two fingers on her right hand in a machinery accident at work.
She married Al Eldred on Feb. 4, 1961 and they bought a house at 38345 Laura Dr. in Eastlake, Ohio where they lived until Al's death.
After 36 years of marriage, Al passed away on May 17, 1997 at the age of 67 from cancer. He was cremated.
Onda sold the house they had lived in for 36 years and moved into the apartment building with her sister Mildred in Willoughby, OH where she lived until June of 1999 when she moved into the Grande Point Health Care Center in Highland Hts.
Onda was about 5' 6" tall, had black hair in her youth and dark brown eyes. She loved to cook and had large family gatherings for Thanksgiving and Christmas until it got to be too much and she passed it on to her children. She also loved to knit and crochet making many afghans & slippers & enjoyed playing cards.
Onda passed away on New Year's Day Jan. 1, 2000 at the age of 85 at the Health Care Center. She had breakfast and was then found dead on the floor of her room from heart failure. A memorial gathering at Brinkman & Sons Funeral Home was held on Tues. Jan 4th attended by about 80 relatives and friends.
She was cremated on Jan. 5th and her ashes, along with Al's, were placed on top of Al's mother, Pearl Eldred's, grave at Knollwood Cemetery.
