Bear Robe "Sni Mato" Chatillon
Birth: 1820, USA
Death: Jun. 25, 1846
Wyoming, USA

Bear Robe was the daughter of Lakota Chief Mahta Tatanka, [Bull Bear]. She had a sister named Mary White Butterfly, and a brother, Mahto-Tatonka. Bear Robe and Henri Chatillon married about 1839 in the native Lakota custom. Henri was her second marriage. The first was a full-blood native. There was a birth defect that appeared later in five generations: she had one leg that was shorter than the other. They had a daughter, Emily in 1841, who was born at Fort Laramie, and did not inherit the defect. Their next child came in 1846. It did not survive and the Bear Robe became ill to death June 25th, 1846. Henri left Francis Parkman for the purpose of visiting his ill wife. She was close to death when he arrived to the Lakota camp, she revived and they talked through most of the night. Henri was with her when she died the next day. Lakota mourning and burial practices began. They included a white horse for her spiritual journery because of her lameness. In the painting that Henri commissioned once back in St Louis, and pictured here, are the representations of Bear Robe in life and death as well as the horse in life and death, and the remorseful Henri. Look in the lower left corner to find the tiny horse represented in life. The original oil painting is in the Chatillon DeMenil historic mansion in St. Louis, Missouri. The house is open to the public. See: http://www.demenil.org/ for information and visiting hours.
