Ryan, formerly an aeronautical engineer, served as a Navy SEAL in Iraq. In 2006, during a rooftop patrol, a sniper's bullet struck the rifle Ryan was holding. Pieces of the shattered weapon tore through his face, severing one eye and damaging the nerves of the other, leaving him completely blind. After recuperating from his injuries at the U.S. Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., Job was discharged from the Navy with the rank of special operator second class.
Once released from service, Ryan went on to join Camp Patriot – an organization committed to taking disabled veterans on outdoor adventures, adding to their sense of empowerment. Ryan climbed Mt. Ranier with Camp Patriot, showing that no matter the challenges wounded veterans face, they can stillaccomplish incredible feats. Ryan and other wounded veterans have also joined Camp Patriot in activities as varied as fly fishing in Montana, moose hunting in Bangor Maine, and elk hunting in Idaho.
In 2008, Ryan was awarded the Mission Continues Leadership Award for his inspiring work at Camp Patriot. Ryan has used his award to allow more wounded veterans the opportunity to experience outdoor adventures.
Ryan died after a complex 12-hour surgery to repair his eye socket - the second of three scheduled surgeries.
