Kentucky, USA
Death: Dec. 1, 1937
Pontotoc County

The Soldier's Wife
Mary, the granddaughter of Barefoot Douglas Armstrong was Cherokee and said to be the brother of Robert Armstrong althogh her relationship to Robert has not been proven. Mary had suffered the hardships of American prejudices and the greed of mankind very early in their youth in the mid 1800's. Having lost her parents at a very early age she was left orphaned and later taken in by a Preacher. Physically abused by this man of the cloth Mary bore the scars of inflicted torture for life on her back having been beaten and chained. Mary's living quarters while in custodianship/slave of the Preacher were made outdoors in a chicken pen. In this decribed residence is where her cries were miraculously heard by a Physician who then recued her from bondage circa 1870 while on his way making a home call.

Mary along with four of her daughters (Eliza, Queen, Ethel and Maud) moved from Stone County, AR to Bell, Co., TX in 1880 after W. J. Lancaster was released from his second term in prison and had victoriously returned home to Arkansas by train.

After Mary was ran over by a buggy breaking her hip wooden cruthces suviced her until her death. After the death of her husband she filed an application for a widow's Civil War millitary pension to which Mary was granted.

Commissioner of Confederate Pensions
Name: Mary Ann Lancaster Pension Number P3840 Application number A4678. Birth Place: Kentucky.
Wittneses to affidavites for Mary Ann Lancaster's pension were Mrs. Eula Jane Pence of Allen, OK, Mrs. Lois Pence of Allen, OK the wife of William Leroy Pence; grandson of Mary Ann Armstrong.

Mary's daughter Elizabeth "Eliza" G. Lancaster b. 1873 Stone Co. AR was enumerated on the 1800 cenus at Precinct 2, Bell, Texas. Her death is date and place is unknown.

Mary's last residence was at the Eula Pence Cafe & Boarding House in Allen, OK living with her daughter Eula Jane Pence nee Lancaster. Eula was also the informant who signed her death cirtificate upon Mary's death.

Mary's grandaughter Alwilda Lancaster Anderson who had lived with Mary and W. J. Lancaster as a young girl gave witness decribing her grandmother to be Cherokee who spoke very broken English to which she could hardly understand.

Mary's grandson Alvin Leroy Furgerson shared with his family photos of his grandmother both before and after her hip was broken. In 1934 he traveled from Arizona to Calvin, OK to do repairs on his mother's home taking with him his daughter Eupha Nell Furgerson Thurman and niece Edna Jenell Furgerson Gaddy. These three family members share coinsiding testimony that Mary was Cherokee, orphaned, and had been physically abused by a Preacher.

Celesta Wandalene Blaylock Furgerson author and historian for Calvin/Hughes County, OK and wife of living great grandson of Mary concluded coinsiding historical evidence conclusive with above mentioned.
