The son of Jacob K. & Jane (Allison) Shatzer, in 1860 he was a laborer living with and/or working for farmer Abraham Shank in Greene Township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 11" tall and had auburn hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Drafted at the stated age of twenty-two in Franklin County October 16, 1862, mustered into federal service at Chambersburg November 4 as a private with Co. A, 165th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company July 28, 1863, at Gettysburg.
2. Enlisted at the stated age of twenty-three in Chambersburg February 15, 1864, mustered into federal service there February 19 as a private with Co. L in the three-year organization of the 21st Pennsylvania Cavalry (182nd Pennsylvania), and honorably discharged with his company July 8, 1865.

He married Lavina C. Miller August 10, 1865, in Carlisle and fathered the children you see linked below. Cause of his death is listed as "pulmonary tuberculosis."

George W. Shatzer died at his home a mile north of the toll gate, west of town, Friday at 1:30 p.m., aged 70 years, 6 months and 10 days.

He had been ailing for the past year and a half, and is survived by his widow and four children: Mrs. Andrew Hoover, of town: Carl, who is doing hospital work in the Philippine Islands: John, of Evanston, Ill., and Grant, at home. Six grandchildren also survive.

Mr. Shatzer served his country during the civil war, being with the 165th Regiment PA Infantry and the 21st PA Cavalry for nearly three years [2.2 years in total].

He was a member of Salem United Brethren Church. Funeral at his late home on Monday at 10 a.m. with interment in Cedar Grove Cemetery.
