Private John Dillon enlisted at the start of the Great War. He served with the 2nd Battalion, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, Regimental no. 4527. John was killed in the dying days of the Battle of the Somme (what horrors he must have witnessed!). The battle took place between 1 July and 18 November 1916 on both sides of the River Somme in France. More than 1,000,000 men were wounded or killed. It was one of the largest battles of World War One and was regarded as one of humanity's bloodiest battles.

We were told that he was a dispatch rider and he was killed in action at the Somme. His body was blown to pieces but his name is recorded on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing, Somme, France (see photo on right) and he is commemorated on the Diamond War Memorial in Derry.

John, who worked in a butchers shop in Derry, was married to Bridget Bradley. Their only child, Molly, was born after John went to war so, sadly, father and daughter never met.
