Private John Dillon enlisted at the start of the Great War. He served with the 2nd Battalion, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, Regimental no. 4527. John was killed in the dying days of the Battle of the Somme (what horrors he must have witnessed!). The battle took place between 1 July and 18 November 1916 on both sides of the River Somme in France. More than 1,000,000 men were wounded or killed. It was one of the largest battles of World War One and was regarded as one of humanity's bloodiest battles.
