Military: Co I, 30th Regiment (after reorganization in 1862, became Co E), Georgia Volunteer Infantry, Army of Tennessee, CSA, "Clayton Invincibles", Clayton Co GA. Private, enlisted 25 Sep 1861. [Served along with 4 of his brothers.] Pension records show wounded in right leg and permanently disabled at Jonesboro GA 31 Aug 1864. [Defending his family, friends, and neighbors during Shermans march.]

This Company was ordered to the relief of Gen Finegan at east Florida 4 Oct 1862 by order of Gen Mercer. Arrived at Jacksonville FL 6 Oct 1862 and remained to 11 Oct when they returned to Camp Hardee, arriving 15 Oct 1862. Ordered by Gen Mercer to Coosawatchie SC where they remained one day and returned to Camp Hardee Oct 1862. Left Savannah GA on 14 Dec 1862 (by train) and arrived at
Wilmington NC 19 Dec 1862.

Pension Application: Thomas J Stephens, Co E, 30th Reg - Soldiers and Widow's Pension - Widow: Mrs Sarah E Stephens (maiden name Arnold). Soldier wounded in battle of Jonesboro by a minnie ball in right leg between Knee and ankle shivering the bones and causing paralysis. Uses crutches. Been in state since 3 Aug 1840, died 18 Jan 1914. Widow been in state all life, married 4 Oct 1880 in Henry Co near Ellenwood. She resides in Forest Park. Widow's first application dated 1919.
