Elvira "Effie" Grippo Gatti
Birth: Apr. 18, 1904
Lackawanna County
Pennsylvania, USA
Death: Feb. 24, 1963
Hartford County
Connecticut, USA

Elvira Grippo was the third of six children born to Italian immigrants, Mary Guida and Frank Grippo, in Scranton, PA. She grew up at 1028 Luke Avenue. On Feb. 6, 1921 she married Domenick Gatti with whom she had five children. The 1930, '32, '36 and '37 Scranton city directories list Domenick's occupation as policeman. The 1940 Scranton directory shows the Gattis at 121 Masters. Domenick, who was listed as "Danl", was a stone mason and Effie was a weaver at Samuel J. Aronsohn (Petersburg) silk mill located 0.2 of a mile from their house on Masters. In the 1941 Bristol, CT directory Dominick, Effie and their daughter, Theresa are listed at 20 Fenn Street. Domenick was an inspector at Wallace Barnes Co. They rented at 103 Pine Street for a short time before taking the 20 Fenn Street house where they are listed until the 1949 Bristol directory which shows them at the home they purchased at 446 King Street. Domenick and Effie always had beautiful gardens and fruit trees. Their home on King Street had wooden shelves in the basement filled with jars of fruits and vegetables Effie canned. It also had her wringer washer, Domenick's tools and the most wonderful musty smell. A wonderful cook, her nimble fingers quickly pinched and rolled her homemade cavatelli and her pizza was legendary.
