Anthony Popejoy was vicar at Overton 1646 to 1655, d. 1665. Spouse Jane Batts d. 1664."
A following search shows that an Anthony Popejoy was the vicar of St. Michael & All Angels, in West Overton from 1646 to 1655. The House of Lords Journal, Volume 8, shows that "Mr. Anthony Popejoy, clerk, shall be instituted and inducted to the Vicarage of Overton, in the County of Wilts, by Sir Nath. Brent; being presented to the same by the Earl of Pembrooke."
Anthony Popejoy's brother was a yeoman, "John Yew of Broad Somerford, Wilts." His will, dated 22 July 1657 leaves 20 shilling to his brother as requests that his brother performs the funeral service ~ apparently he didn't know that his brother had died the year before?
Popejoy was the name given to winners of archery contests. So did Anthony win a contest, then become a clerk, and then become a vicar? Likewise, was his brother John named Yew due to the fact that he was a yeoman?
