John Joseph Jamieson was born on Sept. 26, 1866, in the town of Thorpe, Grindon Parish, Durham Co., England. His parents were David Jamieson, employed as a "coal merchant" on the Wynyard Estate, and wife, Ellen Smurthwaite Jamieson. His older brothers were William Jamieson, born 1862 or 1863 and Henry Hugh Jamieson, born 1863 or 1864. Mother Ellen died late in 1866, perhaps at John Joseph's childbirth. Father David then remarried Margaret of Durham Stanton and had son David in 1869 or 1870.

The 1881 census for Tottenham, London, lists 14 year old John Joseph Jamieson as a visitor and former student at the Nightingale Rd. Grammar School, born at Stockton - on - Tees.

The 1900 US census for Forward Township, Allegheny, Pa. lists the following: 33 year old John Joseph Jamieson living with 16 year old wife Rebecca E. Behanna Jamieson. The have been married 2 years & have an 8 month old daughter, Mary M.; John Joseph had emigrated to the US from England in 1887. He can read & write and they rent their house. His occupation is coal miner. Also living in the household are 20 year old brother-in-law David Behanna, 14 year old sister-in-law Arolley Behanna and 21 year old boarder Stewart P. Fagan. A later passport document states that John Joseph had lived in Monongahela City for all of the 13 years.

The 1910 census for Forward Township lists the following; 42 year old coal miner John J. Jamieson living on Milesville Rd. with wife, Rebecca E.; daughter Marianna M., 10; son, David, 6; son, John J., 4; daughter, Elizabeth, 2; son, James S., 1 month. Year of emigration, 1889; rents home.

The 1920 census for Forward Township list the following; 52 year old miner John Jamieson lives with wife, Rebecca E.; Son Dave, 16; son Joe Jr. 14; daughter Elizabeth, 12; son Carson, 10; daughter Mary A. Behanna, 20; and son-in-law James Behanna, 21. Rents home.

The 1930 census for Port Vue Borough, Allegheny Co. lists 64 year old tin mill worker John Jamieson living on Burnt Way with wife Rebecca, 43. They rent the house. Living next door were son John Joseph Jamieson, Jr. (Ham), 23; wife Anna, 19; brother Carson J., 23; daughter Betty J., 4 years 3 months; and daughter Rebecca A., 2 years 6 months. The plant where John Joseph worked was the McKeesport Tin Plate Co. in Port Vue, which later became the Kelsey-Hayes Wheel Co. It was within walking distance from the Jamieson rental house.

John Joseph retired from McKeesport Tin Plate in 1937. He died at home at R.D. #3, Elizabeth 10 years later. Wife Rebecca provided the info for his death certificate.

One of his grandsons recently stated, "When people got loud or excited, Pappy just toked on his pipe and smiled."
