Col William Henry "Bill" Rice

Col. Rice was at 3rd Marine Division before he became CO of 1st Battalion, 12th Marines on February 6, 1967. Col. Rice also became CO of the 1st Composite Artillery Battalion, which was made up of several units at Gio Linh from February 27, 1967 to April 27, 1967. These units consist of Charlie Battery, 1st Battalion, 12th Marines, (a 105 MM howitzer gun battery), Bravo Battery, 6th Battalion, 27th Artillery (a 175 MM howitzer gun battery) of the U.S. Army, and Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 4th Marines, 3 tanks, 2 twin 40 MM guns, 2 quad 50 machine guns. Col. Rice continued to be CO of 1st Battalion, 12th Marines until September 6, 1967.


PAWLEYS ISLAND | Colonel William Henry Rice, retired, passed away Tuesday, March 18, 2008 and joined his son, Michael W. Rice, in heaven.

Col. Rice was born April 13, 1930 in Macon, Georgia, the son of Charles Augustus Rice Sr. and Sara Shaw Rice.

Col. Bill Rice served his country in the Korean and Vietnam Wars as an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps for 30 years. After retirement, he and his wife moved to Pawleys Island, where he joined the Pawleys Island Masonic Lodge No. 409 in 1982. He held numerous offices, including Master in 1986. He was a 45 year Master Mason and was voted a Life Member of the Lodge in honor his of many services.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Charline Redding Rice; his brother, Charles A. "Gus" Rice Jr. and wife, Wille; his sister, Joyce R. Ellison and husband, Charles; his daughters, Linda R Ward and husband, Steve, and Melanie R. Rust; his son, Larry G. Rice and wife, Lottie; grandchildren, Wes Ward and wife, Suzanne, Amanda Stephens and husband, Jonathan, Zach Rice, Cortney Rice, James Rust and wife, Jessica, Jennifer Moore and husband, Ian, and Mary Rust; and great-grandchildren, Taylor Ward, and Lily and Roy Rust.

Services will be held in St. Pauls Waccamaw United Methodist Church, Pawleys Island, 11 a.m. Saturday, March 22, 2008.

The family will receive friends at the Pawleys Island Masonic Lodge No. 409, 75 Haunted Lane, Pawleys Island, from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday, March 21, 2008.

The Georgetown Chapel of Mayer Funeral Home is assisting the family.
