Philip and his twin brother Hugh were the youngest of James Elliot and Elizabeth Dwight Cabot's seven sons. He, like all his brothers, attended Harvard and later taught at the Harvard business school.

Like his older brother Edward, Philip suffered terribly from diabetes, but luckily insulin was discovered in time to help him and prolong his life. He lived almost as long as his twin Hugh.

His divorce from his first wife, Lucy K. Fuller, was the first divorce in the Cabot family according to Nancy Cabot Osborne (1894-1980) one of his neices.
