Steve Gust Pappas (Papadopulos), age 74, died April 23, 1994 of prostate cancer.
He was born January 23, 1920 in Salt Lake City to Gust and Eugenia Collias Papadopulos, immigrants from Corinth, Greece.
He married Helen Anast June 6, 1953.
He was a member of the Greek Orthodox Church.The innovation, vigor and commitment that marked Steve's personality also marked his lifetime work pursuits. After having originally worked in his father's sheep business, Steve moved on to make a name for himself in the building supply industry. Motivated by an inherently strong work ethic, traditional values of honesty and integrity, and and unfailing sense of duty to protect and preserve, Steve found joy in working for his family, working with his family, and working for the future of the community. By 1962 the same land upon which Steve grew crops and raised sheep as a boy and young man had been converted to the lumber yard where he founded the family business, Pappas Builders Supply.
Steve unconditionally gave of himself. In 1992, Steve was honored by the Salt Lake City Greek Orthodox community for his voluntary stewardship and service. Throughout his life, he fed hungry people, offered work to unemployed people, and sacrificed for those in need. His selfless concern for the welfare of others, especially the welfare of future generations, was foremost in his life. Steve was determined to leave to succeeding generations the same opportunities for prosperity his own parents had left to him. His devotion to family and friends, as well as the mere comfort of his presence, will be sorely missed.
"Dear Steve, you were the kind of person that even if it rained 40 days and 40 nights, you would have still let us keep your umbrella."
Steve is preceded in death by sisters and brothers, Marie, Helen, John and Jim.
Steve is survived by his wife; his brother and sister-in-law, George and Leila; his children and their spouses, Jeannine and Warren Timothy, Dino and Kristy Pappas, John Pappas, George and Carrie Pappas, Denise and Dean Gianopoulos, Stephanie Pappas; his 12 grandchildren, Christian, Steven, John and Elyse Timothy; Katherine, Andrew and Elaina Pappas; Stephanie, Andrea and Maria Pappas; Pilar and Alexa Pappas; many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 28, 1994 at 12 noon at Holy Trinity Cathedral, 279 South 300 West. Friends may call at the Deseret Mortuary, 36 East 700 South, Wednesday from 5-7 p.m. with Trisagion service at 6:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, Steve would have preferred donations be sent to The Patriarch Athenagoras National Institute, P.O. Box 1231, Cheyenne, WY 82003-1231.
