RAYMOND A. HARWOOD
Raymond A. Harwood of Palmyra, NJ died Dec 10, 2002 at the age of 83.
Beloved husband of 58 wonderful years to Florence (nee Rose) and loving father of Lois Ann Harwood of Riverton, NJ. Brother-in-law of Doris and Leonard Hutchinson of Philadelphia.
Ray was born in the Frankford section of Philadelphia in 1919. As a young boy, he joined Boy Scout Troop 223 and advanced in time to head scoutmaster, leading the troop from 1948-1954. He was a graduate of Frankford HS class of '38 and a very active member of North Frankford Baptist Church where he and Florence met and later married in 1944.
During WWII, Ray proudly served his country in the Army Air Force as an airplane mechanic and training instrutor. He was honorably discharged as Staff Sergeant in 1946.
Ray dearly loved his friends and family, was an avid photographer and a skilled craftsman, but the cornerstone of his life was most certainly his deeply cherished Christian faith.
Ray was a quiet man of great devotion who was an eager and earnest worker in his Christian life. In 1950, he and his wife moved to Palmyra and joined Central Baptist Church where both were very active. Here, Ray served his Lord in many roles, including both Superintendent and Secretary of the Sunday School and as Trustee. Ray and Florence also took much enjoyment in leading the Jr. Baptist Youth Fellowship for many years. Their work as well as their marriage was a true and lasting partnership in the spirit. In later years, Ray felt honored to serve as church custodian and took great pride in keeping the Lord's House in admirable repair.
Ray joined the Free and Accepted Masons 161, Palmyra in 1969 where he served on the Board of Trustees for many years. He enjoyed the fellowship and philanthropic work of the Masons and was a devoted member of his lodge.
For more than 40 years, Ray was employed by Eaton Corp of Philadelphia, and at the time of his retirement in 1982 was Supervisor of Advanced Engineering Testing. His talent for precision and attention to detail served him well in this capacity, ensuring that safety standards for industrial trucks were continually advanced.
Friends, neighbors and members of Central Baptist Church and Covenant Lodge 161 are invited to attend a celebration of his life at Weber Funeral Home, Riverton, NJ on Friday, Dec 13 at 11a.m. All are invited to call one hour prior to the service. Interment at Lakeview Memorial Park, Cinnaminson, NJ will be at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, contributions to the general fund of Central Baptist Church would be apprecitated by the family.
