William Rutledge Wood, 82, of Moriarty passed away during the night of Feb. 28.
Known to all as Bill, he was a loving husband to Clarice for 58 years. He was a self-made mechanic, aircraft pilot and businessman. A veteran Army combat engineer, Bill was a leader in the early development of Moriarty, serving as its first chief of the volunteer fire department and a councilman on the first City Council. He was the owner and operator of the former Valley Motors Supply, an auto parts, garage and wrecker service on Central Avenue of old Route 66.
He was preceded in death by his son, James "Jim" Robert Wood, and daughter, Cari Louise Wood Buchanhan.
He is survived by his wife, Clarice Mackey Wood; his son, William Rutledge Wood II; six grandchildren, Cara Buchanan Houston and Crisi Buchanan Sharpe of Nevada, Tracy Wood and Sandra Milligan of Colorado, and Jennifer and William Rutledge Wood III of Georgia; and seven great-grandchildren, Josh Houston, Andrea, Kyle and Zackary Sharpe, Kristen and Kelly Wood and baby Milligan.
