William H King
Birth: 1831
Ware County
Georgia, USA
Death: Sep. 9, 1863
Ware County
Georgia, USA

William H. King was born in Ware County, GA in 1831, the exact dates are unknown. It is thought that his middle name was Harris but this is not sure. He had a brother named Timothy Harris King and he named one of his sons Timothy Harris King as well. He was the son of William King ( 1788- 1862) and Nancy Sweat. Both of his grandfathers, William King ( 1741-1804) and Nathan Sweat ( 1753-1824 ) were Revolutionary Soldiers. They were both from South Carolina and both settled in Georgia after the War.

His father, William King ( 1788-1862) was born in Orangeburg District, South Carolina. His parents moved to Georgia at some point in his early youth, settling in Bulloch County. About 1820 he married Nancy Sweat in Emanuel County. Mr. King, the father, was among the earliest settlers of Ware County. having moved his family there in about 1827. He was a private in the Indian War in Capt. James A. Sweat's company of Ware County militia, June 9th to Aug. 19, 1838. He served as Coroner of Ware County, 1858-1861, and died the next year after completing his term.

William H. King, our Confederate Soldier, married Hester Dryden, the daughter or Elder John Dryden and Hester Miller in 1850. According to the 1860 census they were living in Northern Ware County. On March 4, 1862 he enlisted into Co. B, 50th GA Regiment, Capt. Pendleton's Company, known as the Ware Volunteers.

Both of William King's brothers, Andrew and Zibe served in the Confederate Army. Andrew Jackson King enlisted July 10, 1861, in Co. "L", 26th Georgia Infantry Regiment under Capt. Cary W. Styles, and was appointed 5th Sergeant of the company Sept. 4, 1861. He was badly wounded in the pelvis at the battle at Spottsvylvania Court-house, Va., in May 1864, but recovered only to be killed a month later, June 18, 1864, in the battle at Petersburg, VA.

William King's military records, as well as his wife's pension application state that he died in 1863 at home on sick furlough, most likely due to disease or injuries from the War. His exact burial location is unknown. Mrs. Hester King died about 1908 and is most likely buried next to him.
