Grace Edith Golson Robinson
Birth: Oct. 15, 1905
Saint Matthews
Calhoun County
South Carolina, USA
Death: Dec. 24, 1994
Saint Matthews
Calhoun County
South Carolina, USA

She was the daughter of John David Golson and Loula Annette "Nettie" Redmon Golson. She married Shellie "Sheck" Johnson Robinson on July 24, 1923 in Orangeburg, SC. She had four children: Edith Annette Robinson, Jewell Aliene "Doots" Robinson, Betty Miranda Robinson and Shellie Johnson "S. J." Robinson, Jr. She had a great love of her family which included twelve grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren at the time of her death. It appeared that she was getting ready for bed when she passed away on Christmas Eve night.

She grew up attending Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church in rural St. Matthews where she was a member. She later transferred her membership to St. Matthews Presbyterian Church. In the 1940's she was diagnosed with colon cancer. The family was "called in" as the doctors thought she was going to pass after her surgery. She fooled them all and lived until 1994. She had a colostomy bag until her death.

She was an excellent cook and homemaker. Some of her many talents included knitting, crocheting and sewing. She and her daughter Jewell used to make all sorts of craft items and sell them at local craft shows to make extra money. She taught her granddaughter, Laurie Davis, how to crochet at the age of 10. Laurie had chicken pox so she told her daughter Betty to bring Laurie over to her house and she'd teach her to crochet so it would keep her hands busy. She also enjoyed reading and playing cards with her family.

She always maintained a small flock of chickens for fresh eggs. She had a jar of buttons that she would let the grandchildren play with when they came for visits. She also would play Chinese Checkers with her grandchildren. At Halloween she would dress up as Crazy Betsy when the grandchildren would come over to play after trick or treating was over. Crazy Betsy was a costume she came up with that involved a witch mask with an old dark dress. She would come from around the back of the house making sure everyone saw her from their cars, then she'd run to the back of the house taking off her outfit as she went. She'd then come out the front door to greet us. The grandchildren would be all abuzz about seeing Crazy Betsy in her yard.

She had a love of her daily soap operas and she liked reading Harlequin romance novels and the Bible. She also liked to work Find-A-Word and Cross Word puzzles. She would often jot down stories from her lifetime and poems from her childhood. She also wrote a few poems of things that happened in her life. One of her poems was about a baby deer that Jay Robinson, one of her many grandsons, found and cared for. She was a true inspiration.

She and her older sister, Esther, lived across the road from one another. When Esther started slowing down because of age and health, she would stay at night with her in case she needed anything. She truly loved her family and friends. She was a very special lady.
