Ebenezer Cobb has the distinction of being the only Kingston, Massachusetts resident to live in three centuries: 17th, 18th, and 19th.
Ebenezer Cobb, who was the first child of Ebenezer and Mercy (Holmes) Cobb, was born in Plymouth (later Kingston -near what was known as "Plain dealing" or more currently as Seaside) April 2, 1694 and died December 8, 1801 at the age of 107 years, eight months and six days, having lived in three centuries. He lived first in Plymouth (because Kingston was not a town at the time of his birth), then in Middleboro and Halifax, but spent the greater part of his life in Kingston, having returned there in 1735.
From Kingston Town Hall Records:
• Ebenezer, Nov 10, 1782, 59th yr (tombstone says 59th years).
• Ebenezer, Dec 8, 1801, 107 yrs, 8 mos, 6 dys
The following remarks are from The Cobb Genealogy by Isaac Cobb:
"It is said that when Ebenezer Cobb was ten years old in 1704 he recollected seeing the funeral procession of Peregrine White of Marshfield, the first person of New England, who was born on board the Mayflower in Cape Cod Harbor, in November 1620.
"His days were spent cultivating the earth. His mode of living was simple; only twice in his life and then it was to gratify his brethren on the jury, did he substitute an enervating cup of tea in place of the invigorating bowl of broth or nutritive porringer of milk. He never used glasses, but for several years could not see to read. He was moderate of stature, stooping in attitude, having an expandable chest, and a fair and florid countenance.
"He enjoyed life in his old age, and in his last year declared that he had the same attachment to life as ever."
