Jane G Crowson Terry
Birth: Jan. 19, 1806
North Carolina, USA
Death: Jan. 9, 1891
Richmond County
North Carolina, USA

Jane is the daughter of William and Nancy Crowson. She married James Leak Terry about 1828.

Mother of five children:

1. Dr. Pleasant Pickett Terry (1830-1889) - moved to Mississippi
2. Elisha C. Terry (1834-1911) - Richmond Co. farmer
3. Emeline Terry McDonald (1836-1887) - Richmond Co. farmer
4. James Leak Terry Jr (1840-abt 1864) - probable casualty of the War Between the States
5. Sarah Ann Terry Terry (1841-1924) - married a Terry cousin and moved to South Carolina

Jane's parents moved from the Black Jack district of Richmond County NC to Hickman County, Kentucky, circa 1833. William Crowson died in 1836 and Nancy in 1842. William left 160 acres in Kentucky to James Terry and Jane Terry, formerly Jane Crowson, which they and other Crowson family members later sold for $1 each to Samuel Watkins.

A Watkins Family Bible record lists Jane's birth name as Jane G. Crowson. The meaning of the middle initial "G" is not written out. The owner of the Bible is probably Jane's sister, Mary Elizabeth Crowson, who married Samuel Watkins.

[The initial on this tombstone is often misread as "G". A comparison was made with another tombstone written in the same style and most likely by the same stonemason that contained both letters "C" and "G". Jane's initial is clearly a "C". Further research has proven her maiden name is Crowson.]

[All online citing of Graves and/or Bounds as her middle/maiden name(s) show no source citations and none have been found. There is no direct connection between Jane Terry and the Graves or Bounds families. Her husband, James Terry, did have an aunt who married the son of a local hotel proprietress, Jane Bounds Cole, d. 1810. There is also a marriage record of a much younger woman, Jane Graves, who married a Terry man. The two Jane Terrys lived in the same timeframe in Richmond County. That is probably where the confusion originated with associating Jane G. Crowson Terry with the name Graves.]
