Terry the son of Herman W. Sumerlin and Marie Sumerlin, dear brother of Larry D. Sumerlin, all of Brandon Oregon; enlisted in the US Marine Corps on September 15 1966 in Portland. In Vietnam he was assigned to and served with Company M, 3d Battalion, 4th Marines, 3d MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

During the month of September the 3d Battalion continued to conduct combat operations in northern Quang Tri Province maintaining a Command Post at Dong Ha and the Companies carrying out their missions from Con Thien (Hill 158) and Cam Lo.

On September 7, Con Thien came under a heavy enemy artillery barrage, damaging a bunker and causing several casualties. NVA forces were observed to be gathering and Company K and M were dispatched to confront the enemy threat. Scattered engagements continued throughout the day surrounding the Combat and Fire Support Base, with artillery duels and ground force contact. Sixteen men were killed in action, one of the casualties was LCpl Sumerlin by hostile rifle fire.
