Grave marked with a Confederate flag, CIVAL WAR VETERAN. PRIVATE, ENLISTED IN COMPANY C 10TH TEXAS INFANTRY AT FORT HERBERT, VIRGINIA POINT, GALVESTON, TEXAS, JANUARY 3, 1862. HE WAS RECRUITED AT BUCHANAN, JOHNSON COUNTY, TEXAS. He was born in Cole County, Missouri as a twin with Elizabeth Rose (Betsy) Stephens, He was the son of John Thomas & Catherine "Hobaugh" Stephens. He married Mary Jane "Miller" October 4, 1860 in Johnson County, Texas. He was the father of John Thomas, William Henry, George Washington, Robert Lee (Bob), Sarah Catherine (Callie), Mary Susan (My G-Grandmother), Martha Elizabeth, Alice Dosihular, Euwin, Andrew Jackson (Andy), Josie Matilda & Nancy Ann (Nannie) Stephens all of whom were born in Johnson County, Texas. Merrill died, of complications of "Swamp Fever" that he had contracted during the Civil War, in Erath County, Texas.
