Area Man is Killed In Vietnam

The Vietnam war claimed its third victim from Warren County Friday, June 16, 1967, when a 25-year old Youngsville man was killed while being evacuated from a combat mission.

Spec. 4 Willis Michael Sullivan of Brown Hill, R.D. 1 Youngsville, the father of five ch1ldren, was killed at approximately 9 am Friday morning when the helilcopter in which he was a passenger exploded, killed an estimated 14 to 18 men.
According to military reports, the helicopter drew hostile ground fire as it was attempting to evacuate members of the 101st Airborne Division from a combat area. In the conflict, a hand grenade aboard the helicopter exploded, which in turn, caused the helicopter to explode.
Spec. 4 Sullivan, Mike as he was called by his family and friends, is survived by his wife, the former Mary Bullock of Clarendon, and five children: Kathleen Marie, 4, Robert Michael, 3, twins Roger Dale and Crystal Ann, 16 months and Rodney Lee, 6 months.
Spec. Sullivan never saw his youngest son.
Also surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Willis M. Sullivan, Sr., and a sister Barbara, and a brother Richard all of Brown Hill. His paternal grandmother, Mrs. Rose Sullivan, a gold star mother, who lost a son, Ralph, in the korean conflict, also survives, along with two nephews and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Sullivan joined the armed forces in May of 1964. Prior to being stationed in Vietnam, he had served with the Military Police in the Dominican Republic. In December of 1966 he was sent to Vietnam, where he was attached to the 101st Airborne Division.
The Sullivan family was notified of their loss Saturday night. A telegram of official confirmation was received from the Secretary of the Army yesterday.
Funeral arrangements, although not yet complete, will be handled by McKinney Funeral Home, Youngsville.
