Martha Ellen Brown's first husband Henry Herman died in Chattanooga, Tennessee 22 November 1863. He was a Union soldier who drowned in the Tennessee River below Lookout Mountain before the "Battle Above the Clouds." He is buried in the Chattanooga National Cemetery as "H. Harmon."

Martha and Henry had 3 sons, Walter S., Louis M., and Albert Henry Herman, who was born after his father's death.

Martha Ellen Brown Herman married James Hamilton Hayes, 19 April 1866 in Ross county, Ohio. They had 6 children; Nettie Belle, Elizabeth Gertrude, Lyda Mary, Clifford Theodore, William Earl, and Jessie Mae Hayes.
