William "Garrie" was my grandfather and the son of James Wayne Van Allen and Mary Elizabeth Chinn Van Allen. He was a descendant of Pieter Van Alen/Allen, who immigrated from Holland to the New Netherlands (Albany County, NY) around 1650.
Garrie spent his early childhood in Missouri. Around the age of ten, in 1896, his family moved to Indian Territory, Creek Nation, Oklahoma. His brother, Burley, was born in a wagon yard in Checotah, about 13 miles from Eufaula, where the family finally settled.
Garrie and his brother, Wayne, later ventured to Arkansas, mainly looking for work. They ended up in Lick Creek Valley, Logan County, Arkansas. It is there that they met sisters, Effie Kenedy and Ivah Kenedy. Garrie married Effie on November 17, 1910. Wayne married Ivah on September 9, 1909. Both marriages were in Logan County, Arkansas.
Together, Garrie and Effie had five children, Ruby, Harry, Reba, Charles and Retha. Harry died when he was only two years old of an accidental poisoning.
The influenza pandemic of 1918-1919 took the life of his young wife, Effie. Garrie was left with four small children to raise. It didn't take long to find a mother for them. He married Winnie Pool on July 17, 1919.
Together Garrie and Winnie had two children, William Hederick and Wilmoth Maxine. (Maxine was killed by a gunshot wound at the age of two)
Winnie died in 1943 and in 1946 Garrie married Laura Ann Randall. They had no children together.
Garrie is buried between his two wives, Winnie and Laura Ann. His first wife, Effie, is buried in Lick Creek Cemetery, Logan County, Arkansas.
