CIVIC LEADER DIES AT 78


Edward holding Eardley, 78, business leader and electrical contractor, died at his residence, 412 S.1st West, Wednesday at 8 a.m. of a heart attack.

In his 60 year contracting career, Mr. Eardley supervised the installation of over five million dollars of electrical equipment in the Salt Lake area and had held high positions in local associations.

He had been chairman of the Chamber of Commerce board of public speaking, president of the Utah Manufacturers' Assn., president of the Utah Electrical Contractors. He was a candidate for mayor of Salt Lake City in 1931 and Congress in 1936. During World War I, he was chairman of the U.S. Government's public information committee.

Mr. Eardley was active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and had held many positions in the Sixth-Seventh LDS Ward of which he had been a member all his life. He had been interested in youth organizing the old Wandamere Athletic Club, 7th East and 27th South, at the turn of the century, which was the forerunner of the LDS Church's recreational program.

Mr. Eardley was born December 5, 1878, in Salt Lake City, the son of Bedson and Mary Ann Holding Eardley. He received his education in LDS day schools prior to working as an electrician's apprentice.

He married Olive Pixton, September 24, 1903 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.

Survivors include his widow and four sons and one daughter, Kenneth P., and Mrs. Heber C. (Leanore) Brimley, both of Salt Lake City; Paul P., St. George; Edward P., Washington, D.C.; Dr. Gene P., Santa Monica, Calif.; nine grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Alice Obray, Salt Lake.
