Lillie married Joseph J. Martin, 6 Oct 1909, Jasper, Newton County, AR.
Lillie was my maternal grandmother. I have wonderful memories of this great woman. Alone she raised 5 children in the Ozark Hills of Newton County, Arkansas. She picked cotton and was a laundry woman to make enough money to support her children.
I remember her as a child. She never owned a car and walked everywhere. She had a red umbrella that she used on hot summer days. I could see that bright red umbrella a block away coming down the road to visit our family in Eufaula, Oklahoma. It is my most loved memory of her, and her umbrella is one of my most prized possessions.
She was part Native American and her personality was very much from that culture, alhough our family doesn't know which side of her family Native American comes from. She was 5 ft 7 in, slender, and had auburn red hair.
SHIRLEY PRICE NANCE (granddaughter).
My mother, Delphia Mazie and grandmother "MA" Lillie Louisa are my life's HEROES. I dearly loved them both.
