She was born on Oct. 6, 1960, in St. Paul, Minn., the daughter of S. Luther and Audrey (Sande) Simonson. Rachel grew up in Canton, S.D. and moved to Madison in 1971. She graduated from La Follette High School in 1978. Rachel was devoted to her widespread family and felt blessed to know her many friends. They appreciated her quick wit, infectious laugh, and kind heart. Rachel worked at Gardner Bakery in the Thrift Store and on the production line.
Surviving are her son, Darin; daughters, Janna and Alena; their father, Pete TenBruggencate; her mother, Audrey Simonson; sister, Deborah (Wayne) Smith; and brothers, Nathanael and Peter (Denise) Simonson.
Rachel was preceded in death by her father, S. Luther Simonson; grandparents, aunts and uncles.
Memorial services will be held at LAKE EDGE LUTHERAN CHURCH, 4032 Monona Drive, Madison, at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2011, with the Rev. Stephen Marsh presiding. Burial will be at Hope Cottage Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 24, 2011, and at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lake Edge Lutheran Church or Operation Boot Strap Africa, 122 W. Franklin Ave., Suite No. 306, Minneapolis, MN 55404.
