TRINITY – Masonic graveside services for Melvin Thomas "Tom" Harris Sr., 85, were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2011, at Rosemound Cemetery in Waco. Mr. Harris died Friday, Jan. 21, in Conroe. He was born Aug. 30, 1925, in Chilton, the son of John Newton and Dessie Mae Harris. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943-46 as a Seaman First Class during World War II. Mr. Harris was the owner/operator of an optical business where he made lenses for glasses. He retired from the U.S. Post Office after more than 20 years as a letter carrier. He was a Mason for over 50 years, belonging to the Rothwell Lodge of Houston, then transferring to the Joe Werner Masonic Lodge of Trinity. He also was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Trinity. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Virginia Adams Harris, and a brother, Henry B. Harris. Survivors include his wife of 32 years, Pearl Marie Harris; a son and his spouse, Melvin Thomas and Carlette Harris Jr.; five stepchildren, Shannon Brewton, Natalie Goodwin, Piper Goodwin, Jay Goodwin and Darold Goodwin; nine great-grandchildren; a nephew, Thomas Val; and a number of other relatives. Waller-Thornton Funeral Home of Trinity directed the arrangements.
