Ann Barbara Raikes
Birth: Aug. 27, 1838
Camden
Preble County
Ohio, USA
Death: Aug. 30, 1845
District of Columbia
District Of Columbia, USA

Ann Raikes was discovered while searching for the burial site of her grandfather, the eminent geographer/historian/cartographer William Darby (1775-1854), who died and had his funeral in Washington, D.C.

Ann was the eldest child of Darby's only progeny who survived to adulthood, Elizabeth Ann Darby Raikes. She was originally buried in Holmead's (Western) Burying Ground, but removed to Rock Creek Cemetery when Holmead's was given up as a cemetery c.1881 and replaced by a private school, replaced by a parking lot, and modern rowhouses today.

Since the Raikeses lived in Ohio then, I assume Ann died while visiting her grandparents. Her tombstone says:

In memory of Ann B. eldest daughter of Franklin F. & Elizabeth A. Raikes & grandDaughter of Wm. & E. Darby, who died Aug't 20, 1845, aged 7 yrs. & 3 days.

Her parents are buried in Indiana, but I assume her grandparents are somewhere nearby her.

Dear Aunt Ann ~ We cleaned your marker, and sprinkled stars on your grave; you warmed my heart and helped a fine man deal with the ghosts of war ~ rest on until we hug.
