Houston Fire Department.
Served six years.
While enjoying her firefighting duties she also participated in The National Combat Challenge which tests skill And endurance using firefighting simulated drills. On October 19, 1998 she placed first in the Western Regionals FireFighter Combat Challenge held in Las Vegas, Nevada.
She was to be married later in the year 2000.
On Valentine's Day, February 14, 2000, in the early morning hours, Kimberly was dispatched to a fire at the McDonalds Restaurant located at 12602 Bissonnet. This fire was determined to be an Arson fire by The Houston Fire and Arson Division. Three young men had attempted to break into the safe at the restaurant and started a fire to cover up the evidence. They were later apprehended. While inside the building fighting the fire the roof collapsed and Kimberly was killed. She was the first female firefighter to be lost in the line of duty in the Houston Fire Department. Kim did not leave this world alone. Her brother FireFighter Lewis E. Mayo III was killed as well.
