Francis Little Rites in Maize

Funeral services for Francis Thomas Little, age 92, of Maize, retired farmer and a resident of Sedgwick and Harper counties for the past 72 years, will be held at the Maize Evangelical United Brethren church at 2 p.m. Monday. He died Friday at Denver, Colo. where he had been visiting a daughter.

His son, Rev. W. F. Little of Minneapolis, Kan., will conduct the service, assisted by L. W. Biddle, pastor of the church. Grandsons will be pallbearers. Burial will be in Maple Grove cemetery here with the Miller mortuary of Liberal, Kan., in charge.

Mr. Little was born at Ahdrumsee, Ireland, 13 Dec 1857, and came to the United States with his parents when four years old. The family settled in Wisconsin, later moving to Illinois, and in 1878 settled at Viola, Kan. As a young man Mr. Little was one of the pioneer country school teachers in Sedgwick county.

He homesteaded a claim in Harper county in pioneer days. He married Mattie Stevens, member of another pioneer family, in 1882. She died in 1934. The family moved to Maize in 1901 where Mr. Little has since resided except for visits to his children.

Throughout his life Mr. Little was active in civic and church affairs. For years he took a part, in this section, in the battle to enforce and retain prohibition. He made a hobby of writing and was the author of many poems and compiled a very interesting story of his long and active life.

In addition to his son mentioned above, he is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Priscilla Locke, Denver, Colo., Mrs. Bessie Nicholson, Maize, Mrs. Mattie Renner, 2214 West Second, and Mrs. Susie Miller, Liberal, Kan.; two brothers, R. H. B. Little, Denver, and J. C. Little, Valley Center; three sisters, Mrs. Naomi Culver, Hutchinson, Kan., Mrs. Ella Kimel, Clearwater, and Mrs. Bessie McBurney, San Diego, Cal.; 21 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren.

Thank you dear great grandfather for writing your life story in "A Kansas Farmer." Your descendants have enjoyed your story and your poems more than you could have imagined.
