Jim "Poker Jim" Unknown
Birth: unknown
Death: Feb., 1894
McKenzie County
North Dakota, USA

Legendery poker playing cowboy. His real name and age are lost to history. "Poker Jim" was found frozen to death leaning against a large rock after failing to return to the Lower W-Bar Ranch from a trip for supplies in the winter of 1894. Legend has it that a portion of that same rock serves as "Poker Jim's" headstone. On his three-day return trip, after picking up provisions in Glendive, he was last seen alive about ten miles away from the Lower W-Bar Ranch by Harlowe "Tough" Bentley, the foreman of the Horse Camp on Smith Creek, where he spent his last night. Burnt matches lay near his body indicating he had tried to build a fire to keep warm. His pack horse was found loose nearby, and his saddle horse, found tied to a tree, had eaten all the bark.

Note: A large rock, rather than a traditional headstone, marks the grave of "Poker Jim." Next to Sid Tarbell.
