Lieut. George Crawford served in Co. F,6th Michigan Cavalry during the Civil War.During the mounted charge led by Major Peter Weber at Falling Waters Maryland on July 14,1863,Lt.Crawford was wounded, eventually losing a leg.Because of this.he was discharged in Feb.1864.In 1887,Gov.Cyrus Luce of Michigan chose Crawford to serve with George Briggs and Peter Lennon on the Gettysburg Battlefield Monuments Commission. In Sept.1887 he visited Gettysburg to locate positions where the monuments were to be placed. The Michigan monuments seen at Gettysburg today are due in large part to the efforts of a one legged veteran who called Big Rapids home.
