Minnie Hilda Bacon was born in Eastport, MS. Five days after being born her mother died so she was raised by her maternal grandfather, Mose Nunley of Iuka, MS. However, shortly after she turned six years old, her father came and took her back. It was a sad day for her, as she had never known any family other than the Nunleys so she hid under the porch with her friend,"aunt" Etta Nunley (Mose's daughter from his third wife). She left crying and began her new life of working in the fields and taking care of a new younger brother, Buster who was born in 1921.
She was forced to drop out of school in the sixth grade to help around the house and farm. In 1929 her father died so she then went to live with her older brothers George and/or Archie over the next few years. In 1934 she married Jack Rooks of Jasper, AL and had three daughters. A few years later she divorced and with her children took a train to California where she became a life long resident.
Minnie was an original single mom working full time for Douglas Aircraft Corp who raised her daughters alone. She purchased her first home in the early 1950s where she remained until her death in 2005. Minnie, or Nana as everyone called her, gave unconditional love and was loved by all.
