Richard Earl Double served in the U.S. Army
was in WW11 From 30 Sept 1941 intill 23 Sept
1945 he was awarded the Theater ribbon 4
Bronze stars, American Theater ribbon,
American Defense Service Medal,Good conduct
Ribbon,distinguished unit citation.he has
Served in Africa,Iltay, England and was in
Normandy France,he was a glider pilot & the germans captured him but was soon freed by the parashooters
while in England he met his
Wife Vera Cropper after the war he enlisted
With the Merchant Marine's so he could
Return to England to marry her.

Love Duty carried him far

Ex-GI Went on sea duty to reach his bride-to-be
After two round trips to England one at the request
Of the Government,the other at the request of his
Heart Richard E. Double and his English-born
Sweetheart,Whom he met during his frist trip
And married during his second,are now ready
To settle down since they were reunited with
Her arrival here Wednesday morning.they are
Staying temporarily at the home of his brother-
In-law and sister,Mr&Mrs Raymond F. Swinehart
720 Rockhill Street.Mr Double a former corporal
With the 315th troop carrier group,reversed
the formula of marrying his sweetheart and then
Returning to the states to await her arrival.
He arrived in America in September of 1945 after
15 months in the european theater of operations
and was discharged a short time later,since
Transportation restrictions blocked an immediate
return to England to marry his future wife he
Returned the hard way by signing up with the Merchant Marine.Afer being accepted Mr Double arrived in
England in early December of 1945 and the couple
Were married December 8 1945 He then returned
to the states with his ship,arriving here in March
and had a short wait intill his wife joined him
She sailed to America on the S.S. John Erickson
Mrs Double who served in the English Army
Territorial service equivalent of the American Wac.
met her husband while he was stationed at
Kettering,England her home is in Manchester England
Where they were married.Previous to his service
In the ETO Mr. Double served three months in
South America,he is now employed by the Fruehaut
Trailor company, The couple will reside at 635
Leesburg Road.

Richard & Vera Cropper Double were married in the
Church Of England Dec 8 1945 just short of there 50th
anniversary Richard pasted away April 2 1994
